Close To The Bone
Polo Magazine
The tail of a bonefish flicks in the light of the Islamorada dawn, and I feel caught under the same spell that captivated writer Zane Grey on these flats early in the century...
Arc of the Silver King
American Way Magazine
"Monos," whispered our young Venezuelan fishing guide, pointing to movement high in a coconut palm in an opening on the towering mangrove shoreline. Straining in midcast to see what he was pointing at, I caught a glimpse of a hunched-over howler monkey clambering through the palm branches. Down below, a wild-eyed tarpon of about four pounds picked that moment to explode out of the tannin-stained water, my orange-hackled streamer fly hanging from its jaw.
Roosters of Dominical
Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine
Out of nowhere the dark shapes of roosterfish appear at the surface, thrashing and boiling behind the hookless plug that I am frantically retrieving from a jagged sculpture of wave-washed rocks off Dominical Beach, Costa Rica. "Hear they come," I yell, as I watch these brilliantly-marked bullies fight each other to get at the darting teaser lure. At my side on the cockpit rail, Lindsay Sharpe, my fishing partner, holds a 12-wgt. and waits for me to draw them into casting range so he can drop a big popper in the melee.
Texas Bass
Fly Rod & Reel Magazine
There was a time in Texas not that many years ago when an angler might get a mention on the outdoor page of the local newspaper for catching a five pound bass. But today, at places like Lake Fork, Choke Canyon Reservoir, Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend, it takes an 8-pounder or bigger just to qualify for a snapshot on the wall at a lakeside café.
Striper Lighthouse, Cape Cod, MA
Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine
It is 3:30 a.m. and a heavy overcast has draped a curtain around a full moon shining over the North Atlantic. The soft glow from the Race Point Light illuminates prime striped bass water on the north end of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Steve Kean, a veteran flyfisher and beach outfitter, is wading a few steps out in the surf near the mouth of a small estuary when two stripers boil up in front of him. Shining his flashlight next to the shore, he is thrilled at the sight of sand eels stacked along the edge of the beach...
Padre Island Nat'l Seashore, Texas
Fly Fishing in Saltwaters Magazine
As the early sun crested the North Padre Island surf, sanderlings scurried over the wet sand like wind-up toys. Out over the first bar, black skimmers, their bright red bills shining like war paint, begin low strafing runs down the beach.
From our camp at the base of the dunes we could see a modest surf breaking with clear, green water tight to the beach. On a day like this, we knew, 40-inch "bull reds" would be running on the surf side of the barrier island, and big speckled trout would be holding in ridges and pockets waiting to ambush finger mullet.
Cajun Redfish
Fly Rod & Reel Magazine
It is a still, predawn morning under moss-draped oaks and the musty smell of the bayou permeates the air. As we load our gear into a sleek little skiff, the dockside conversation turns to critters that bite or sting.
I am listening to my fishing partner Sonny Mahan, a fellow Texan, talking to our fly fishing guide Mark Brockhoeft about the last time they set out from this dock. That's when a buck moth caterpillar fell out of a tree and landed on Sonny's hand.
Cash for Bass
Field & Stream Magazine
Last August, a novice angler casting a white spinnerbait along the shoreline of a 20-acre Texas farm lake caught and released the largemouth of a lifetime. Based on length and girth measurements, the Florida-strain bass would have weighed in around 15 pounds. At another lake on the same property, a veteran angler fishing a pumpkinseed-and-chartreuse plastic worm caught and released sixty bass one spring day last year, while his partner landed and put back ninety fish.
Jamaica Bay
Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine
It is that magical hour just after dawn on an estuary alive with predatory stirrings. Three of us are alone in our thoughts on one of the most unique angling environments in North America. Looking to the northeast across Brooklyn's low-lying shores I can see the Manhattan skyline resting quietly on a Sunday morning. To the east, a jet rises off the runway at JFK Airport,
On a windless summer morning, Capt. Bryan Goulart guides his 21-foot Maritime along Rockaway Inlet into the heart of New York's Jamaica Bay.
Our dreamlike mood is broken when we spot the surface boils of feeding fish just ahead of the boat.
Isla Holbox Tarpon
Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine
A fly fisherman can easily imagine worse fates than being stranded on Isla Holbox in the Yucatan-provided, of course, that he was stranded with a couple of stout saltwater outfits. On this tropical island perched on the cape separating the Caribbean from the Gulf of Mexico, visitors sleep under palm-shaded palapas, ceiling fans run on the sun's power, and shower heads are crafted from conch shells.
Golf carts provide taxi service on the unpaved streets of this seacoast village, and open-air restaurants offer fresh seafood and idyllic views of the fishing fleet.
