I Came. I Golfed. I Conquered.
Meeting News
PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. -- Standing with my playing partners at the Pebble Beach
Golf Links' 373-yard, par-4 first hole, I searched for one of those positive thoughts
that might help me make a graceful shot off the tee.
A few weeks earlier, after lining up a visit to this storied course
on the Monterey Peninsula, I tried to stay calm and do what any weekend
golfer would do under the circumstances: I revamped my swing, hit
a hundred baskets of balls, and read Ben Hogan's "The Modern
Fundamentals of Golf" four times. |

Venezuelan Retreat
The Dallas Morning News
LA GUAIRA, VENEZUELA -- Just 15 miles offshore from this 400-year-old colonial
seaport lies the top of an undersea mountain known as La Guaira Bank. The year
around it attracts massive schools of baitfish that in turn draw migrations of
sailfish and marlin.
The prolific big-game fishery - where any day of the year it's possible for an
angler to record a "grand slam" catch of a sailfish, white marlin and blue marlin
' also draws armadas of sleek-lined, tournament-rigged Bertrams, Hatterases and
Chris Crafts. |

Island of Women
Coastal Outdoors
ISLA MUJERES, MEXICO -- Offering the same white beaches and turquoise seas but
a slower pace from Cancun's party atmosphere, tourist traffic and highrise glitz
is nearby Isla Mujeres (Island of Women), one of the many small gems of Mexico's
Yucatan Peninsula.
A taxi ride from the Cancun airport to the Puerto Juarez dock and a leisurely
trip by ferry across a short stretch of sparkling Caribbean transports the traveler
to an island with a touch of Hemingway's old Key West and Havana. |

Mayan Treasure
Coastal Outdoors
COZUMEL, MEXICO -- Anchored like a schooner 12 miles off Mexico's Mayan coast,
Cozumel offers the Yucatan's patented turquoise waters and white sand beaches
but with the laid-back lifestyle of a remote tropical island. Along this 28-mile
long by 11-mile long island are some of the most exciting snorkeling and diving,
explosive flats fishing and blue water angling that the Caribbean has to offer. |

Zihuatanejo's Sparkling Bay
Coastal Outdoors
ZIHUATANEJO, MEXICO -- Open-air restaurants, sheltered beaches, and shops with
Taxco silver and Oaxacan rugs are among the many special pleasures of Zihuatanejo.
But at this old-fashioned fishing port on Mexico's west coast, the sparkling bay
is what leaves the most enduring impression. |

A Wilder Florida
Coastal Outdoors
CHOKOLOSKEE, FLORIDA -- On the way down US 41, before the sign directs the traveler
south to Everglades City and Chokoloskee, there is no mistaking the look and feel
of a wilder Florida. The manicured lawns, glittering boutiques and country club
elegance of Naples are only 30 miles to the north but the thick tropical vegetation
and the nervous stirring of wildlife along the Tamiami Canal hint at new adventures
ahead. |

to baby tarpon on tropical canals that wind through downtown San Juan are among
the unique experiences offered visitors to Puerto Rico's capital city.

Destin's Sands
Coastal Outdoors
DESTIN, FLORIDA -- The jade colored water and light sand beaches off the Gulf
shores of Destin and Fort Walton Beach have always left an indelible impression
on visitors to these onetime sleepy fishing villages on the Florida Panhandle.
In recent years several devastating hurricanes have been countered by feverish
building with a resulting bloom in shopping malls, upscale boutiques, and highrise
condominiums. Today, while the trip to the local bait shop is a little more challenging
in summer season traffic, the captivating seascapes continue to stir the soul. |
